George Lucas seems like
a bit of an odd bird. Ever since
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith was released, a lot of people have been wondering what he would do for an encore. Could he actually
wrap his head around something other than a Star Wars film? Although it was originally reported that he would direct the Tuskegee Airmen movie
Red Tails, it seems that he's in no hurry to get back to directing, as he ended up only writing and executive producing it. Now, this week, we have our first mention of another Lucas project that is in development, but once again, he's only on board as a producer.
According to
Heat Vision, Kevin Munroe (
TMNT) is going to be directing an untitled CG animated film for Lucasfilm. Here's where it gets a bit weird though: it's a musical. Featuring music "from a variety of sources". What's more, although the plot is currently under wraps, word on the street is that it has something to do with fairies. It's still unclear whether or not this is based on a story by Lucas, but the screenplay was written by David Berenbaum (
Elf,
The Spiderwick Chronicles). Could this be the next Avatar? Either way, Lucas is clearly involved in some way, but I'm guessing this is not the triumphant return to independent filmmaking that everyone was hoping for from him. What do you think... are you interested in either Red Tails or this CG musical? Will we ever see another George Lucas project worth getting excited about, or is he long past the days of
THX 1138?
